For over 100 years, Gennett Lumber Co. has been a leading provider of premium-quality hardwoods in Western North Carolina. Founded in 1901 by brothers Andrew and Nat, our company has maintained a solid reputation for delivering exceptional products and services to our customers.
Our History
Our story began in 1901 when Andrew and Nat Gennett purchased a lumber mill on the banks of the Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina, along with a vast area of timber in the roughest terrain the South has to offer. Despite the abundance of resources, the competition was fierce, but the Gennetts' business acumen and long-term vision enabled them to outwit their competitors and build a thriving business. At the height of its expansion, the company owned 25 mills, a rail system, and even a town named Gennett in Tennessee.
The Gennetts were also pioneers in environmental preservation, recognizing the importance of conserving old-growth forests long before it became mainstream. They sold 36,000 acres of forest in Fanning County, Georgia to the United States Government, giving birth to the United States Forest Service. Today, we continue to honor our commitment to quality and service, just as we did when we first started over a century ago.
